Several chapters participated on this year’s Big Event initiative, a day in which students across the country join forces to serve their local communities!
SAL members at Texas A&M University met with other local volunteers on campus for a kickoff ceremony and to collect tools needed for their service project. Their project stated that they would be working on flower beds and removing bushes. Once they arrived at the job site, they were directed by the owner of the property to clear some brush. He fed them lunch and then they continued to work.
Chapter President Kara Thomas said of their project: “We made a huge impact on the guy’s property and he was very thankful. Everyone had a great time volunteering and said they would love to participate in Big Event again.”
Virginia Tech University members participated by volunteering in the Blacksburg community. Members did some yard work and landscaping for a local resident. As Chapter Vice President Sydni Koch summarized, “Even though it was quite the chilly day, there was still a good turn out and our members were excited to be able to help improve our community and lend a helping hand where we could!”
Through the Keep Las Cruces Beautiful campaign, SAL’s New Mexico State University Chapter was assigned to El Caldito Soup Kitchen to help out however needed. After completing the assignment there, they then stopped by the Domenici Hall to assist the City of Las Cruces Utilities with some gift bags for children.
University of Oklahoma Chapter volunteers were assigned to help at a special needs community about 45 minutes from campus. The team they were on cleaned the whole building and the surrounding areas. They uprooted old flowers from the flower beds and planted new ones.
“This was an easy exercise for us and we did it devotedly and whole-heartedly,” said Chapter Secretary & VP of Community Service Stephanie Jangha. “At the end, the place was beautifully decorated with new flowers. The director of the place was very impressed with what we did and praised us for our hard work.”
