UGArden Project
UGA members took some time to participate in their university’s community garden! They took a tour of the large facility/garden area and moved/packed up items on the property. They also tended to different types of plants (cutting off dead leaves and other tasks).
According to the UGArden website, its mission “is to build a community of students centered on a sustainable food system. The goals of UGArden are to: teach students to grow food using organic practices; share healthy, sustainably grown food with members of the local community who are less fortunate; engage students in the local community through service learning; and provide opportunities to learn sustainability skills and experiment with new ideas.” SAL members were assisted by Berea Antaki, the UGArden Volunteer Coordinator who is on an assignment there from AmeriCorps. She gave them a great tour and put them to work but also worked with them!
Stephanie Skipper, SAL’s Chapter Support Representative for UGA, was even able to bring daughter and participate in the day’s activities. And Chapter President Anjoua Myers said of the project, “We had a great time and hope to volunteer with UGArden again.”
