One Million Bones Project
At their first meeting of the semester, the Mississippi State University Chapter took time to participate in the One Million Bones Project as a group. According to their website, One Million Bones is “a large-scale social arts practice, which means we use education and hands-on artmaking to raise awareness of genocides and atrocities going on around the world, this very day.” They plan to collect 1,000,000 handmade bones to be installed in the National Mall in Washington, D.C., this June.
SAL member Antoinette Jenkins is a representative for the project and has a goal of collecting 7000 bones by June. She showed the members a video explaining the project and then set everyone to work to make the bones out of clay. By the end of the meeting, the members had made 157 bones! In addition to helping with the project, each bone made will also benefit CARE, an organization that is working in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. For each bone made, the Bezos Family Foundation will donate $1.
Chapter President Mercedes Allen said, “The result of doing this community service at our meeting was not only to give members a service hour, but for them to learn about problems occurring in other countries that are not as fortunate as we are. It raised awareness and left a rewarding impact on members, that they were able to contribute in this humanitarian effort.”
