Food Fight Against Hunger, Sigma Alpha Lambda’s Fall Initiative, brought together 36 chapters from all over the country to collect food items and monetary donations to make a difference in the fight against hunger. Once again, SAL chapters broke records as we collected more food than ever before. As a whole, SAL Chapter collected over 13,000 food items and over $800!
The Food Fight Against Hunger is a competition in which chapters collect non-perishable food and funds to try to beat other chapters in their category. During the Fall semester, chapters collected food and funds in a number of different ways. Chapters were also encouraged to find other ways to fight hunger, such as volunteering at food banks and shelters.
The Food Fight Against Hunger 2012 Winners are:
- Small Chapter: Emporia State University
- Medium Chapter: Ohio University
- Large Chapter: University of Tennessee
- Fundraising Chapter: Ohio University
The Emporia State University Chapter did a phenomenal job this year, collecting more than half of the total cans! They got other organizations from their school involved to help them collect cans and also did a number of “Storm the Dorms” events during which they went door-to-door in the dorms collecting cans.
Many chapters, such as Old Dominion University and the University of Akron, placed bins around campus for members and other students to donate cans at their convenience. Other chapters, such as Georgia Southern University and the University of Kansas, asked members and officers to bring cans to meetings and other chapter events.
The University of Louisiana Lafayette collected cans of pet food for the Acadiana Humane Society to honor the memory of former student Mickey Shunick. They also donated cans of food to St. Jude’s Diner and volunteered to help make a meal there.
The Rowan University Chapter wanted the cans they collected to help Hurricane Sandy victims. They donated their cans to Faith Fellowship Ministries World Outreach Center in Sayreville, NJ, to be distributed in their food pantry.
The University of Mississippi Chapter partnered with the Black Student Alliance at their school to put on a program called Love Connection based on a TV game show. They asked those who came to watch to voluntarily donate cans for admittance to the show.
In addition to collecting cans, the Boston University Chapter raised funds by holding a “Dough Raiser” at the local Uno’s Pizza.
