Each year, SAL members from across the nation spend time honoring the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. by volunteering on the MLK  Day of Service. In addition to honoring Dr. King’s impact, MLK Day is an excellent way for SAL members not only to kick the new year off right by giving back to their communities, but also to individually earn the Servant Leadership Award from Sigma Alpha Lambda.

In January 2019, SAL chapters found a multitude of ways to serve their communities. For example, our University of Texas Arlington chapter lent a hand to local nonprofit Mission Arlington, helping to organize the nonprofit’s Christmas store. Members from SAL’s Mississippi State University chapter helped to rake leaves, pick up trash, and more at J.L. King. The University of Arizona chapter even found a way to combine fitness and service, using the Charity Miles app to raise money for Operation Smile as they hiked together.

Individual SAL members also found a variety of other ways to give back on MLK Day. For instance, University of Pittsburgh member Cheyenne Von Hudson took advantage of a volunteering opportunity at her school to spend time at the Southwestern Veterans’ Center. University of North Carolina Charlotte member Madeline Bragaw volunteered by serving breakfast at the Union County Community Shelter. These are just a sample of the ways SAL members made an impact as they honored the memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

We’re proud of all our members who took the time to serve their communities by volunteering on MLK Day!
