Stuff the Purse

El Centro’s SAL chapter won the SAL Food Fight Against Hunger completion in their category and was given a $100 check to donate to the charity of their choice. They decided to donate the check along with the purses filled with hygiene items to the Genesis Women’s Shelter.

El Centro had the wonderful idea to hold a drive to collect purses, backpacks and hygiene items simultaneously with the food drive last semester during our annual Food Fight Against Hunger. In doing so, they were able to give back to their community in two different ways.

The Genesis Women’s Shelter provides shelter, safety, counseling, and expert services to battered women and their children in the Dallas area. On April 1st, SAL’s El Centro Chapter along with Rising Star Club, an organization that provides qualified high school graduates with academic support services and monetary assistance for tuition and books, delivered purses stuffed with hygiene items to the shelter.

“We wanted our donation to not only be monetary, but also tangible. We also wanted to let the women and children know that we cared,” Chapter Historian Vanessa Martinez explained.
