Awareness

Creating awareness for worthy causes is important to El Centro College’s Sigma Alpha Lambda chapter. During the first semester, the chapter dedicated itself to raising awareness for sexual assault, domestic violence, alcohol abuse, and social media use. The first awareness event was Bystanders Awareness. Sigma Alpha Lambda students worked with Title IX to pass out materials on how to identify abusive relationships, how to conduct healthy ones and how to avoid certain pitfalls. During the Domestic Violence Awareness event, several speakers came to address different areas of violence. The chapter handed out pamphlets and information on where to seek help and also had 200 people sign a pledge not to commit acts of violence or abuse.

Partnering with the student government, they hosted Alcohol Awareness Day in November. They invited guests from Dallas Challenge who came to speak with the students one on one. Students were able to participate by playing games like drunken dominos and celebrities questions game.

During the Social Media Awareness event, guest speakers gave attendees information about how to represent themselves on the internet and social media platforms. This included how social media leaves a foot trail, to be mindful of what they comment or share, keeping the perspective of promoting a brand (yourself) in a positive way, and Five Steps to a Successful Profile. According to Demetrius Bomer, Chapter VP of Community Service at El Centro, “It was great information to make a positive impact online and gave us professional information to consider. We learned that once something is on the internet it is always there. So be smart while having fun.”
