Food Pantry Volunteering

Last semester, the Sigma Alpha Lambda chapter at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign decided to participate in a regularly scheduled local service event at the Wesley Food Pantry.  This pantry is held every month at a church on campus for members of the Urbana-Champaign community.  Anyone in the area is welcome to come and fill up two canvas bags of food to take home at no charge.  SAL first began volunteering in November, the busiest time of year for the pantry.  They plan to attend every month this semester.  While at the pantry, members assist people by asking which food items they would like and filling bags for them.  They have found it to be a great way to give back, hear individual stories, and feel more connected with their community.

“We have found this service event particularly rewarding because we are able to interact with members of our local community that otherwise we would probably not meet,” said Chapter President Lauren Napoli.
