Tornado Relief

SAL members led by President Layla Niavarani volunteered for approximately 5.5 hours down in Moore, OK, after May’s devastating tornadoes.  They began by moving several items including storage bins, workbenches, tables, and other items out of an affected older couple’s house into their backyard.  They also helped another family by picking up debris, patching up their front yard, moving bricks from a knocked-down patio wall, and ripping out a torn chain link fence from the ground.  Lastly, members aided in scouting more houses to see if other families needed assistance, and provided them with the forms that would go back to the main aid site.

In addition to hands-on volunteering, Sigma Alpha Lambda allocated for tornado relief a percentage of each initiation fee received from new UCO members.  Donations went to UCO Cares, an on-campus organization dedicated to helping the community heal from the tornado’s destruction.
