The Big Event

New Mexico State University was one of several SAL chapters to participate in the Big Event this year. The Big Event is a day of service during which thousands of students get together to volunteer all over the community. Groups are assigned to various projects around the community such as cleaning up a park, feeding the homeless, or tutoring kids.

The members at NMSU were assigned to go to a school for gifted children where they worked on a beautification project. They cleaned up the garden areas on the property so that new flowers could be planted. Not only was this a way for the members to get to know each other, but it was also a way for them to get out into the community and meet new people. They were able to learn about the history of the school and talk with the staff members there.
