Into the Streets
SAL officers and members at University of Alabama Birmingham joined forces with representatives from other organizations and volunteered in the community through the Into the Streets project. They were divided into three different groups: Urban Gardens, Ruffner Mountain, and Village Creek.
At Urban Gardens, volunteers improved each garden bed by weeding, mulching, tilling, and adding wood chips to the soil. This prepared the gardens for planting so they could be used to feed the less fortunate in Birmingham who rely on these gardens. At Ruffner Mountain, they helped with installing a shade net over a greenhouse, protecting plants from weeds with a barrier cloth and moving potted trees from inside the greenhouse to outside. Lastly, those serving at Village Creek cleaned up trash and debris from the area.
