Service and Fundraising Events
The James Madison University chapter is one of our most active chapters. They hold a number of fun and creative service projects and fundraisers each semester. The members and officers come out in full force to help out and make a difference in a number of ways.
Bike for Kids Sake
Every year, the JMU chapter volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sister’s Bike for Kids Sake. They help with the set up and tear down of the event. Throughout the day they help to run the booths where kids can paint pumpkins, play games, etc. One member came dressed up as James Madison to teach the kids about him.
Concession Fundraiser
SAL chapters hold fundraisers throughout the year to earn money for their chapter as well as for charities that they support. Members at James Madison University worked at their school’s concession stand at a basketball game to raise money for their chapter. The money that they raised will go toward Relay for Life.
Tree Lighting on the Quad
The chapter was paired with the Student Government Association to help with the school’s annual tree lighting ceremony. The groups helped with the technical equipment that was used for the choral groups that sang during the lighting. The members also enjoyed watching the performances and meeting the President of JMU.
Valentines for Sunnyside
One member opened up her home on Valentine’s Day so that members could come and make valentines for the residents at Sunnyside Retirement Community. Members were provided with art supplies to hand-make the valentines. At the end of the day, several members went to Sunnyside and hand-delivered the valentines to the residents.
Adopt-A-Street
The chapter has also adopted a street that they are responsible for cleaning four times a year. Members are paired off to pick up trash and other debris. This is a great way for members to get to know each other while making a difference in the community! Typically the chapter will include a social with this event by going out for breakfast before or for ice cream or lunch after they clean the street.
