“Sweet” Chapter Meeting

Chapter members from the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign kicked off their second semester with a chapter meeting that included speed friending, ice cream sundaes and hand-crafted Valentine’s Day cards for residents of a nearby nursing home and a children’s shelter.

First on the meeting’s agenda was a “Speed Friending” game. The room was set up with pairs of chairs facing each other. All members grabbed seats and then each member of a pair had two minutes to talk to the other person to get to know him or her better. Then it was time to rotate! The goal was to talk to everyone, get better acquainted with those you’re not familiar and make new friends.

Next on the agenda — ice cream! Members fixed their own sundaes, with toppings of their choice, while executive board members gave a summary of what their positions entail. This was an especially important topic for members who are interested in joining the chapter board for the 2015-2016 school year.

The chapter ended the meeting by making Valentine’s Day cards for senior residents of Heartland Health Care Center, a local nursing home in Champaign, and for children in shelter homes in Champaign.

According to chapter member Nmerichi Nwakanma, “this has to be the best activity we’ve done so far this year as a team involving leaders, classmates and friends! We all love the fact that we are now someone’s special valentine. The nursing home and the children’s shelter were so excited to receive our cards. They said the recipients thoroughly enjoyed the cards and felt honored that we would put so much thought into making them! In fact, they’ve asked us to come back and hang out with the residents. Did someone say Bingo night?!”
