Ghandi Day at the USF Chapter

Fall 2007 United to Serve
Hard-working and dedicated chapters around the country made a tremendous impact in their local communities with over 170 service projects during Fall 2007. While the projects ranged greatly in terms of organizations served and goals met, all were accomplished with one common thread - students uniting to serve and make a difference in the lives of others.

Many chapters contributed their time to the Fall Initiative for Big Brothers/Big Sisters with local projects for BBBS including: Holiday parties and sports events for the “Littles”, Fall/Halloween carnivals and events, and Christmas toy drives. Additionally, BBBS representatives came to speak at local chapter meetings, helping to spread the word about how members can become involved individually as tutors and mentors for a child in need. Finally, several chapters made a commitment and began working with their local BBBS offices to participate in their national Spring event, Bowl for Kids’ Sake, which is a fun way to raise funds for Big Brothers/Big Sisters at a local level.

Elsewhere, several chapters took to the streets with their walking and running shoes and participated in great events such as the Turkey Trot for Hunger, Alzheimer’s Memory and Breast Cancer Walks. Others chose to give through clothing, toy and food drives serving the homeless, children in need, as well as soldiers serving in the US military this holiday season. On December 1st, National AIDS Day, chapters from four different regions of the country served on their local campuses to help raise awareness and help in the fight against HIV/AIDS in this country and abroad. Overall, this semester SAL chapters and members lent a hand to a multitude of nationally recognized non-profit organizations such as: Habitat for Humanity, The Ronald McDonald House, Salvation Army, Boys and Girls Club and Special Olympics as well as many worthy local and community organizations.  Some of the Chapter Projects included:

World Aids Day - Binghamton University, Eastern Washington University, Florida State University, James Madison University

Ghandi National Day of Service - University of South Florida, Florida International University

Ronald McDonald House - Kent State University, University of Central Oklahoma, UNC Chapel Hill

California Wildfires Relief Fundraiser - Initiated by the University of Southern Californa Chapter with multiple chapters participating
