Every spring semester, SAL focuses on Relay for Life. These all-night, fundraising/cancer awareness events take place all over the country. This year, SAL had 55 teams consisting of 356 members—our highest number of chapters and participants since 2012!
Due to the popularity of this event and the constant need to battle cancer, SAL became a National Youth Partner with Relay for Life in 2010. As such, we have committed to raising $200,000 over a ten year period. Thanks to our members, we collected $22,222 this year! That brings our grand total over the past six years to $152,047!
This year’s SAL theme was Relay for LifeGuard. Many chapters wore specially designed t-shirts and designed their booths according to this theme. They planned dunking booths and played beach games to attract others to come and donate. Other teams got creative in other ways, such as painting henna tattoos or playing trivia games. Every team made a large impact in the fight against cancer.
While every participating chapter worked hard, there are several chapters who put forth an exceptional effort to raise more than $800. They are:

- University of Arizona – $1,266
- University of Alabama – $1,168
- Boston University – $1,025
- University of Kansas – $880
- University of North Carolina Wilmington – $865
A couple of individual members went above and beyond to raise money on behalf of their chapter. Virginia Montiel of Florida International University and Kayla Blood of University of Oklahoma each raised over $1,000.
Every dollar received goes toward something heavily needed in this battle. These donations will go toward research, early detection screening, prevention awareness, administration, lodging for patients using out-of-town treatments, and counseling services for patients and their families. SAL members truly were life savers this year!
